Dr. Jean Goetinck was born in Bruges, Belgium and came to the US in 1952. He studied at Pierce Junior College in California with his brother before enlisting in the army. He served in the Korean War where he developed a profound interest in Japanese culture and language while on leave. After returning to the US, Jean decided on a career in teaching and enrolled at UCLA in the French Department. He met his wife, Dr. Glenys Witchard, and they moved to Tucson in 1964. Jean loved to teach and retired in 1999, busying himself with gardening and genealogy. He passed away quietly in his home on the morning of April 7, 2021.
