I earned my Bachelor of Arts in German and French at the University of Arizona in 1967, and a Ph.D. in Germanic Languages at the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. At Texas I took computing classes on the side and yes, I started with punched cards. When IBM came calling, looking for people with foreign language and computing skills to build the world's first commercial spelling checker in eleven languages, I was ready. From then until I retired, I worked with machine readable dictionaries in multiple languages and linguistic applications for computing. It was a fun ride!
