This course explores the history of representations of repression and resistance in Africa and the African Diaspora. The course examines how different strategies of resistance shaped radical movements from the slave revolt in Saint Domingue (present-day Haiti) to national liberation struggles in Algeria, the Congo and South Africa. We will consider various modes of resistance from Toussaint L'Ouverture to Patrice Lumumba in order to gain an appreciation of the complexities at work in the repression/resistance dynamic of direct relevance to the world we live in today. Cultural representations of the dynamic relationship between resistance and repression and how it has shaped the evolution of history will be considered across different social, cultural and historical settings. Course materials include poetry, music, novels, history, films, essays and speeches.
