Head and Professor, Department of French and Italian

Position Summary

The Department of French and Italian within the School of International Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (SILLC) at the University of Arizona seeks an established scholar with strong administrative experience who can provide energetic and visionary leadership as Head of the department.

The department offers the B.A. in French, B.A. in  Italian, and M.A. in French with a variety of emphases in French, Francophone, Italian and Franco-Italian Studies. The new department head, who is expected to be Professor of French or Italian (open area of expertise) with tenure at the time of appointment, will be expected to be active in administration, teaching, and research. The Department is seeking candidates interested in working with diverse students, colleagues, and communities. The appointment is an academic year (9-month) appointment. The head will report to the Dean of the College of Humanities. In addition to working collaboratively with the Dean, the head works closely with the Director of the School of International Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (SILLC) and the SILLC Business Center to further the interests of all of the SILLC departments and programs, including French and Italian.

Duties and Responsibilities                         

*Exercise active oversight in consultation with the faculty over all French and Italian Department administrative functions including, but not limited to, leading and assessing curriculum and degree programs, attracting graduate and undergraduate students, conducting faculty annual performance reviews, making budgetary decisions, and engaging in long-term strategic planning.

*Forge interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaborations and work innovatively with and on behalf of all the programs of the French and Italian Department

*Work in close collaboration with the Director of the School of International Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (SILLC) and the SILLC Business Center to further the interests of all of the SILLC departments and programs, including French and Italian.

*Encourage and support the professional and academic development of the faculty, and mentor junior faculty, especially in regard to promotion and tenure.

*Plan and budget personnel and operations, including faculty workload issues.

*Work closely with the College of Humanities Dean, Associate Director of Development, Coordinator of External & Alumni Relations, and UA Foundation with respect to fundraising and community engagement.

*Hold regular departmental meetings, attend all meetings of College heads and directors, and represent the Department at College, University, and community functions.

*Maintain an active research agenda.

*Teach one course per semester.

 

Additional Minimum Qualifications

*An earned doctorate in French, Francophone, Italian, Franco-Italian, or another related academic discipline, with scholarly credentials commensurate with appointment at the rank of Professor at a Carnegie Research Intensive Institution.

*Demonstrated ability in an administrative role.

*A record of high-quality teaching

*Professor rank at time of appointment

 

Preferred Qualifications

*Previous administrative experience as a department head or chair.

*Candidate should have a record of significant scholarly achievement with a commitment to interdisciplinarity.

*A demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collegially with faculty, staff, and students.
