Assistant Professor of French (tenure-track) and Director of French Basic Language Program, Department of French and Italian

Position Summary

The Department of French and Italian within the School of International Languages, Literatures, and Cultures seeks a dynamic individual to direct its basic French language program (1st and 2nd year). This position for a full-time Assistant Professor of French (tenure-track) is benefits-eligible and begins on August 15, 2016.

Duties and Responsibilities                         

*Full-time teaching based on department needs (2:2) with 1 course reduction per semester for coordination of first and second-year language courses. The candidate will be qualified and expected to teach French courses for the undergraduate major, especially, but not limited to, courses at the 300 level (i.e., FREN 301, 302, 310, 320) and graduate courses for the Master's in French as well as lecture courses in English for the General Education program.

*Coordination of First and second-year French courses

*Organize and lead the annual orientation workshop for new Teaching Assistants

*Create and review syllabi and order textbooks for the first and second year French language courses

*Conduct class observations and evaluations

*Organize regular general meetings with Teaching Assistants

*Contribute to mentoring students including those from underrepresented backgrounds

*Participate in outreach and contribute to departmental, college, and university service

*Help to develop innovative approaches to enriching student engagement, increasing diversity, and expanding collaborations with community and business partners

 

Additional Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate must have:

*Native or near-native fluency in French and English.

*PhD in French, Applied Linguistics or Second Language Acquisition and Teaching with a scholarly and practical background in second language acquisition in hand at time of appointment.

*Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates should have experience at the collegiate level:

*Supervising Teaching Assistants

*Providing professional development opportunities

*Coordinating multi-section courses

*Demonstrated excellence with online/hybrid teaching; facility with multimedia technology, and an aptitude for teaching large lecture courses.

*Using innovative teaching methods and/or curricular design to effectively engage a diverse student body.

*Interest and/or experience with digital humanities.
